“The well-being of our staff and working conditions are particularly important to us. That’s why it’s great that the energy renovation will reduce the heat load in production and improve production conditions.”

In the energy renovation designed and implemented by LeaseGreen, oil was replaced by district heating. At the same time, lighting and ventilation were modernised and more heat was recovered.
Halva makes all his liquorice and salmiak in Pitäjänmäki. Originally built in 1956, the factory has been expanded several times over the years. Until 2020, the plant was heated with oil.
The energy efficiency measures will reduce the sweets factory’s carbon footprint by 23%. The investment pays for itself in less than four years. At the same time, conditions for workers will improve.
“For us, it is important that sustainability is reflected in more than just words and targets. We wanted to get these things moving quickly,” says Jean Karavokyros, CEO of Halva.
Almost 90 years ago, Jean Karavokyros Kaima founded a confectionery factory with his brother Michael, producing cheap sweets according to a traditional recipe. A few years later, other sweets were added to the range. Today, Halva is one of the leading producers of liquorice in the Nordic countries, exporting around a third of the liquorice and sarmacake it makes.
