LeaseGreen carried out an energy renovation at the Lahti factory of the family-owned Halton company, where the heating production was changed from natural gas to geothermal heat. The industrial geothermal heat pumps have cut the factory’s heating bills by around 35% and emissions from heating by around 90%. The total output of the geothermal system is almost 350 kW.
22 wells were drilled in the geoenergy field, ranging in depth from 310 to 330 metres. In summer, the same heat pumps provide cooling energy to the building, further improving the energy efficiency of the system. Excess heat is transferred from the premises to the wells, which provide more power in the colder seasons. The automation controlling heating and cooling was also upgraded.
Halton Marine achieved life cycle savings of around EUR 2 million with geothermal heating and reducedCO2 emissions from heating by 100 tonnes per year. This is equivalent to the output of around 450 photovoltaic panels.
The plant has a surface area of 7000m2 and a volume of 50 000m3.
