“In large terraced houses, geothermal heating is often a good solution, even though they require more heat from the ground per square metre than apartment buildings.

As Oy Poikluoma, a large terraced house company located in Kaarina near Turku, is saving half of its heating bill with an energy renovation.

The housing company replaced district heating with geothermal heating, in addition to building electric car charging points, modernising the housing company’s automation and connecting it to LeaseGreen’s remote monitoring system.

This exceptionally large company has 72 apartments, and the houses were built between 1975 and 1976. In terraced houses, it is not possible to make the same use of waste heat from the exhaust air as in apartment buildings, and heat transfer distances are often longer than in apartment buildings. That’s why terraced houses need more heat per square metre from the ground than apartment blocks – in effect, more energy wells. As Oy Poikluoma has 31 energy wells with an average length of 300 metres.

As Oy Poikluoma’s terraced houses are located on two sides of a busy road. In the past, the housing association had one heat room, with heating distributed to both sides of the road. With the switch to geothermal, heat distribution was decentralised and each side of the road has its own unit: a newly landscaped heat distribution container.
