Raute takes over the energy flows of the factory

Remote monitoring helps cut energy consumption and carbon emissions at the Lahti plant.

Raute and LeaseGreen have agreed to monitor and optimise energy efficiency at Raute’s Lahti factory. The service contract includes digital modelling of the energy and emissions balance of the property, assessing the condition of technical systems and identifying potential areas for improvement.

Raute is the world’s leading supplier of production processes for veneer, plywood and other veneer-based products. The Nastola factory manufactures, among other things, wood product processing machines and systems. The factory consists of five buildings and a total of 24 000 square metres.

“Sustainability is a hot topic in the wood industry right now, and we want to do our part. We systematically monitor our carbon handprint, as well as our own carbon footprint, water consumption and waste volumes, and aim to reduce them,” says Tapani Kiiski, CEO of Raute.

LeaseGreen analyses the energy flows of buildings using digital twins and compares them with a simulated model of the property and similar types of buildings. Real-time monitoring includes district heating, ventilation, cooling and heat pump systems, where applicable. If anomalies are detected during monitoring, LeaseGreen’s experts will take the necessary measures to ensure that the systems are working as well as possible. The property’s energy budget and carbon dioxide emission reductions are reported to Raute on a quarterly basis.

“We are motivated by cutting climate emissions and cost savings. It’s also a good way for us to keep up to date and get new ideas. Energy solutions are evolving rapidly, and we want to make informed choices,” says Petri Strengell (pictured), Director of Procurement and Production at Raute.

The monitoring and reporting service ensures that the best use is made of existing building services. Possible energy renovations can be planned on the basis of accurate energy data.

“In industrial buildings, it sometimes happens that energy efficiency falls between building services and process equipment maintenance and is not really anyone’s responsibility. Then a big opportunity to save on energy bills and reduce emissions is missed,” says Thomas Luther, CEO of LeaseGreen.

In addition to Nastola, Raute has production facilities in Canada, the United States and China. In total, there are around 800 employees in ten countries.
