New innovation for cold energy storage

With the energy crisis looming, the need for new energy storage solutions has exploded. LeaseGreen’s patented solution was born in spring 2020, when the corona emptied offices.

The end of the teleworking recommendation is not reflected in the workplace. In particular, utilisation rates in meeting rooms have remained low, with the majority of meetings still being conducted via Teams.

“Our experts saw this as an excellent opportunity. Unused conference rooms can be harnessed for cooling storage,” says Jonni Ahonen, Managing Director of LeaseGreen.

LeaseGreen, a specialist in energy efficiency for large properties, is offering property owners the chance to take advantage of the exceptionally cold weather in early April with a new innovation.

The innovation is ingenious in its simplicity. The LG FutureCool makes the most of underutilised meeting spaces by compressing them, with the help of ventilation, into full, zero-degree outdoor air. The meeting rooms are insulated with LG Upreal insulation tape, developed specifically for office use. This ensures that there is no loss of recovered cold energy. When the need for cooling arises in summer, the ventilation direction is reversed and the stored cold energy is channelled to the open plan offices.

Antti-Petteri Rilli, who is responsible for product development at LeaseGreen, does not hide his enthusiasm.

“I am really proud of the LG FutureCool solution. It combines two megatrends: energy storage and a telecommuting model that keeps office occupancy low.”

The idea of storing cold energy in office buildings was born shortly after the teleworking recommendation in Finland following the coronavirus pandemic. After two years of development, the LG FutureCool is now patented and ready for customer use.

“I have to admit that the fact that the winter has continued into April has made our product development team excited. We are happy that we were able to launch the solution while the winter is still going on.”

The prevailing state of high weather allows property owners to store free cold energy directly from the outdoor air and use it in the summer, when the market price of cold energy is at its highest.

“We can already see the untapped potential here. We have piloted this in our own premises here in Leppävaara. Now it’s ready to be used by our customers.”
