The price of geothermal heat: an investment in ecological and economic energy

Geothermal heat is one of the most economical options to choose from among the pioneers of sustainable energy sources, offering an efficient way to heat homes and other spaces. However, the question that many may have in mind is the cost of geothermal heating. How much of a financial investment does it require? Is geothermal heating really an affordable option compared to traditional forms of heating?

The installation of a geothermal system requires an initial investment, mainly consisting of a geothermal heat pump and energy wells. The investment costs vary depending on the size of the house, the heating needs and the soil characteristics. The cost of installing a geothermal system ranges from a few tens of thousands to millions of euros.

The cost of implementing geothermal heating may seem like a big expense at first. However, it is important to remember that geothermal heating is a long-term investment that can lead to significant savings in energy costs in the long term. The running costs of a geothermal system are generally much lower than those of traditional heating systems such as oil, electricity or district heating.

Energy savings

Geothermal energy is an ecological and sustainable form of energy that uses the thermal energy of the soil. It reduces dependence on traditional fossil fuels, resulting not only in economic savings but also in a more environmentally friendly heating solution. A ground source heat pump can produce many times the amount of thermal energy compared to the electrical energy needed to run the pump. One unit of electricity can produce 3 units of heat with geothermal energy.

In some cases, subsidies and tax credits are available for the introduction of renewable energy, which may reduce the cost of installing a geothermal system. Regionally, the profitability of geothermal heating compared to, for example, district heating is very good and offers an attractive option for upgrading the heating system of a property towards sustainable and energy efficient heating.

Price and total cost of geothermal heat

The cost of geothermal heat is not just the cost of installation, but the total cost, which includes energy use and maintenance. Although the initial investment for a geothermal system may be high, the running costs are lower compared to other forms of heating. The time over which savings cover the initial investment will of course vary from house to house, but is often between 8 and 12 years. It should also be noted that in multi-storey and terraced housing, geothermal heating can often be implemented in such a way that the savings that can be achieved are greater than the combined annual costs of the management loan and maintenance of the investment.
